Don't miss this exciting workshop!  Learn how faith and justice are intertwined in a hungry world!  This educational workshop by the Sierra Pacific Synod Hunger Network explores both the life-saving work of the ELCA Hunger Appeal, and how reforming mass incarceration policies and practices is crucial to ending hunger and poverty in this country.  “The Church and Criminal Justice: Hearing the Cries,”  our ELCA Social Statement adopted in 2013, calls us to reflection and action on poverty, racism, and crime.

We are very excited to have Laura Magnani, Director of American Friends Service Committee’s Bay Area Healing Justice Program in California as a keynote speaker .  She has worked on criminal justice issues for over 35 years. She co-authored the AFSC publication, “Beyond Prisons: A New Interfaith Paradigm for Our Failed Prison System."  Also featured are Dr. Ryan Cumming, Hunger Education Director of the ELCA World Hunger Appeal, sharing the lifesaving work of the ELCA Hunger Appeal around the globe, and Rev. Tita Valeriano as worship and bible study leader.  Asante Fair-Trade Products will be available for early Christmas shopping!

Advocacy training that will problem solve and strengthen your ability to Facilitate a vibrant advocacy ministry in Your congregation!

If there is an interest, a parallel children's program will be offered.

* Mini-Film Festival: After the Advocacy Training and lunch a mini film festival will be offered from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. featuring films and trailers of important food and water justice films you can use in your congregation's hunger ministry.

Offering at closing devotions will be split between Bread for the World and the ELCA Hunger Appeal. Make offering checks to Sierra Pacific Synod.

Feeding the Hungry Poor Abundantly with Healthy Food

“When you gather the harvest of your land, you are not to harvest to the very end of the field.  You are not to gather the gleanings of the harvest.  You are neither to strip your vine bare, nor to collect the fruit that has fallen in your vineyard.  You must leave them for the poor and the stranger:  I am Yahweh your God.”  Leviticus 19: 9-10

God was clear.  Whether the harvests were abundant or poor, His people had to share what they grew with the hungry poor.  They could not keep it all for their own families.  The poor must have access to a healthy diet of whole grains, fruit and olive oil, the same healthy foods the farmers themselves ate.

Hear about the ELCA Malaria Campaign and the difference it is making in Africa, where a child dies every 45 seconds from Malaria.  Learn how to get  your congregation involved from inspiring speakers Rev. Howie and Mary Wennes.  

Richard and Linda Knapp will share stories from their recent trip to view and experience the ELCA Hunger Program’s life saving work in Haiti. 

Rev. Tita Valeriano, will call us to action through a thought provoking Bible Study.
